I took a missions trip to Haiti. This trip was a wild one. I went on the trip with a group called TWO(Team World Outreach). This is part of ACM (Antioch Churches and Ministries). We landed in Port of Prince, Haiti. When we arrived there we were met by all kinds of people selling things. They would walk right up to you, getting right in your face. They warned us before we left not to let anyone help you with the bags. They the would expect a tip if they did ( believe me they took this to extreme). We spent the night there and went out to the "jungle," thats what it seemed to me. We travelled for 9 hours in a truck, which on the way had several problems. We had the lug posts break and had to wait for the local dudes to fix it. This is all during the time of Mardi Gras. So all the people were everywhere with that supernatural stuff. Once we got to where the truck couldn't go any further, we had a 5 hour walk to get to the village. Oh and you should know that this walk started at 1:00 am. We got to the place at 6:00 am and all we could do was sleep. I took a dip in the stream before I slept. The stream was where we had to take our baths. When we were taking our baths we always had an audience. We would have the local children wanting to use our soap and that was just allright with me. This place where we stayed was in the middle of nowhere. We had no running water, no electricity, and no cars (like Gilligan's Island). We were there to build a church. This village needed a place for the church and the school they had. The place where the church was going to be built was next to a witch doctor. He tried to cast a spell on the people. That summer they had a huricane that killed the witch doctor and wiped out his house. So the people knew this was from the Lord. We built this church out of stones, that the ladies of the town would bring up this big hill. The ladies were in much better shape than any of us were. We built all the walls in the 10 days we spent there. The church people had to put the roof on when we left. I felt like we were a circus the way they checked us out. They don't see "white" people too much. The place around was so beautiful. Their beaches were not commercialized like ours are. Money was not in abundance there like it is here. Haiti has the lowest national adverage income of any country in the western hemisphere. They really appreaciated the work we had done. When we walked back, the ladies carried our bags. They insisted that they do so. We were all put to shame. They carried them all the way back to the truck. I think we were so tired of the hard work we didn't even put up a fight to stop them from carrying the bags. Through our testimonies and skits, we saw several people come to the Lord. We even made a song in their language, I don't even want to know what it sounded like. We had a great time and the Lord was lifted up!
